During this semester I have made many different projects that all fit into a particular theme. Some of these projects include my multi-wheel project/teapot, hand and wheel project, and all three of my theme choice projects. The first of my theme choice projects is an owl cup, the second is a vase with a tree carved into the side and the third is a vase with flowers carved into the side. All of these projects project imagery of different forms of life that occur in nature. They have all started as simple pieces and have been transformed due to the adding and subtracting of clay to and from the different projects. They all fall into the viewpoint and theme of nature. Most of these projects have a certain flow of a design that goes from the top to the bottom of the piece. For example, my hand and wheel has pieces of rolled clay and flowers that climb up the project, just like a forest vine would in nature. On of my theme choices is a vase that has carved trees on the side. It is made to look the like the roots are digging in below the vase and the branches extend up above the lip. All the projects are made so that the viewer will be able to notice the piece, what it is trying to project, and be able to relate to it as soon as they see it.

With all of my projects I use the same methods of adding and subtracting different amounts of clay to put together the image in my head on to the project. In order to do this I use tools such as carving tools and mostly my hands to form different pieces of clay. I use these tools to carve into my projects and make different shapes and designs to form a shape that commonly occurs in nature. Doing this allows me to be able to take the image in my head and make it to life on my work. Doing this also enhances my choice of imagery and the different ways it can be viewed and looked at by different viewers. It is important to me when I make my projects, that I make the images on then very detailed in design and color. My theme cup with the owl on it has all the details needed to make the piece recognizable to the viewer. It includes the wings of the owl, the eyes, the beak and feet. It is also glazed the appropriate color and is overall a recognizable and natural piece.

My methods of adding and subtracting clay to convey a natural image speak to the reader in their mind and memory. When a viewer looks at a project of mine they are able to notice what the piece is or what it is about, immediately after seeing it and are able to relate that to an image in their mind or an experience in their past. For example, if they look at my teapot, they can see daisies carved into the side. Their mind is able to jump to the image of a spring meadow, riddled with blooming flowers. They can also be reminded of a moment in their childhood, running through a field picking flowers. The way my artwork conveys images the viewer is able to relate to make the viewer have an emotional/mental attachment to the work. This makes the beauty of it much more complex. When you look at a project that fits into my theme of nature, it ties you to things that you already know and feel. The way it conveys life in nature makes you able to link it to past memories, feelings, even the smells and sounds of an excluded forest or meadow.

My work uses the motif of nature and different life forms in nature, along with the techniques of adding and subtracting clay. These ideas and techniques are used to evoke feelings of remembrance and activate the senses. This allows the viewer to be able to relate to the artwork in a thoughtful and meaningful way.

A.
            l. Here I have made a teapot that is very rounded in the body, has a in-set lid and a handle as well as flowers carved into the body as well.

II. I made this by first making a very wide bellied and round vase and the same day, making a hollow lid that fits inside the vase. I then made a spout and handle and applied those to the body of the teapot. The last day I used tools to carve out flowers on the side of the vase.

II.  This project has a very simple body and is based on a theme of nature and plants and life in nature.
B.
            l. Here I have made a hand and wheel project that is in the shape of a vase with a small bottom, wider belly and is even smaller towards the top. Applied to the side of the vase is pieces of clay that are put on the piece to make it look like crawling vines with little round buds on the end and one flower.
ll. I made this by first throwing a vase, footing it and then adding clay to it by rolling out long pieces and applying it with slip, toothed rib and rubber tipped tool. There are also little round dots, or buds applied and a flower as well.
lll. This project has a complex design with a glaze that fits the theme of the piece, which is nature and the life in nature. It is made to look like a crawling vine with small flower buds about to bloom.
C.
             l. Here I have made a theme choice project, or a project that goes along with my theme. What I have made is a small cup with handle that has added clay to give it the features of an owl.
ll. I made this project by throwing a cup and applying a pulled handle. I then added clay to the face of the project by cutting and forming feet, eyes, wings and a beak. I applied it to the project with slip and a rubber tipped tool.
lll. This project had a simple start then was made into a piece that is made to a project that is intended for the viewer to see a natural and figurative form of an owl. This follows my theme of different

I am using techniques such as trowing, adding lots of clay to projects as well as carving and I have also been making lots of different vases. The art elements I am using include the use of color and clay to portray a design and cool colors that complement eachother. Together, these techniques and art elements work together to portray the idea of nature in design and  in color. Specific projects include ones that have trees carved into the side, added peices of clay to make it look like an animal and clay on a vase to represent a climbing tree. The idea of nature makes the viewer feel interested and makes them find ways to relate to the artwork and link it to things from their past, adding an emotional connection to the projects.
